Photographing in the rain. Some tips to have fun in bad weather

In these first days of autumn rain , I thought I'd write this article to help you get out of the house anyway to have fun taking pictures in the rain .

Photographing in the rain? But are you crazy? you will say... It is so comfortable in the house in the warmth, why should I go out?

Well yes, those who love photography know very well that rain and adverse weather conditions can create situations with fantastic atmospheres and generate shots full of suggestion and great charm.

Of course, you need a few more tricks but in this article you will find all the right tips to get perfect shots even in the rain.

It's too easy to go out in August in full sun and take beautiful pictures!!! Try to take your camera in this autumn period with the incessant rain. You will be faced with gray skies, bad light, dead colors and uninteresting subjects.

Precisely for this reason, taking pictures in the rain will make you take a leap in quality and bring out all the creativity in you... as long as you follow some advice that I will give you. Let's go!!!

Find a way to repair yourself and the equipment

The first tip may seem obvious but the first thing to do when you go out to photograph in the rain is to look for a way to repair yourself and your equipment.

By now all (or almost) the cameras on the market are quite waterproof and can handle a few drops of rain well but, in the event of a heavy storm, it is always better not to test the tightness of your camera and try to repair it as much as possible.

There are practical cases on the market that wrap your camera entirely, leaving an opening on the front (to be able to take the photo of course) and one on the back to be able to put your hands in.

These cases are really very practical but obviously in the event of a strong storm they are of little use, in this case an umbrella would be better even if it is really uncomfortable to take a photograph with one hand busy holding the umbrella.

Use a high ISO sensitivity

When you try to photograph in the rain, the light conditions are almost always really bad.

Even during the day, without sunlight and with a completely gray (if not black) sky, there will always be very little light.

For this reason, the second piece of advice we want to give you is to immediately increase the ISO sensitivity of your camera.

Increasing the ISO sensitivity will also help you maintain a fast shutter speed so that your final photos don't look blurry.

But be careful not to exaggerate with the ISO value otherwise you risk getting too much "noise" in the final images which will be grainy and ugly to look at. Professional cameras handle very high ISOs while amateur cameras struggle more. A good ISO value for taking pictures in the rain is 800 .

Try to keep a fast shutter speed

The rain is fast indeed, very fast. Just like any other moving subject, if you want to capture all the beauty and essence of the rain you will have to try to keep a fast shutter speed.

The ideal would be 1/250 sec. but it will almost always be impossible to use this time as the light is always poor.

Start from this value and then go down without exaggerating because beyond the 60th of a second the photo will almost certainly become blurry.

Try to immortalize the sensations that rain causes in people. You may see expressions of annoyance, sadness or even joy and amazement in children. But you must be quick, otherwise you will miss the fleeting moment. Carpe Diem!

Play with lights to create special effects

If you go out to photograph in the rain in the evening, go to the center of your city or to a place where there may be many light sources. (lighthouses, traffic lights, signs)

You won't need these sources to illuminate the scene and allow you to shoot with fast times but they will serve as a background to create "blurred" plays of light that will give magic to the final image.

If you use the aperture wide open, with consequent shallow depth of field, you will have focus on the subject in the foreground while in the background the "lights" will be all soft, as in the images below.

Take advantage of reflexes

Another valuable tip to get good results when photographing in the rain is certainly to look for reflections.

The rain creates puddles on the ground, exploit them trying to turn the world upside down and give a touch of originality to your images.

It will certainly not be easy to focus on a subject reflected in a puddle but with a moment of practice you will see that you will get excellent results.

Wait for the end of the storm for a fairytale light and unmissable opportunities

Photographing in the rain is also beautiful after, when everything is finished. Often, especially in summer, after the rain rays of sunshine filter through and change the atmosphere around you, try to catch them quickly because they will disappear in a short time.

They change colors and suddenly become alive. The wet effect on the street and on colored objects will give that extra touch of magic that will make your images spectacular.

Concentrate even on small objects, mount a macro lens and go and capture the infinite size of a simple drop of water on a leaf. It may seem trivial but if you find the right subject, this drop will become the real protagonist of the shot.
